  • Mindfulness and Compassion: Cultivating present-moment awareness and self-compassion to support healing and personal growth.

Understanding Trauma

Trauma arises from distressing or life-threatening events that overwhelm an individual's capacity to cope. These events can affect both the mind and body through the nervous system, resulting in maladaptive psychological and physiological responses. Trauma can stem from physical or sexual abuse, witnessing violence, natural disasters, accidents, loss of a loved one, discrimination, or medically related events, such as invasive procedures, misdiagnoses, chronic illnesses, intensive care stays, and birth-related experiences. Healthcare providers can also experience trauma through exposure to patient suffering, medical errors, and high-stakes situations.

Trauma can contribute to mental health conditions including anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and substance misuse, and can lead to persistent emotional, cognitive, and somatic symptoms, including:

  • Excessive worrying

  • Hyper-vigilance

  • Low mood and energy

  • Insomnia

  • Physical pain

  • Nightmares

  • Gastrointestinal issues

  • Feelings of guilt or shame

  • Panic attacks

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Dissociation

  • Social isolation

  • Relationship challenges

Research consistently shows that trauma is treatable and that individuals can not only decrease symptoms, but can also make a full recovery to experience a thriving and fulfilling life.

Our Modalities

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

ACT is a psychotherapeutic approach designed to help individuals cultivate psychological flexibility and live in alignment with their deepest values. By combining mindfulness practices, experiential exercises, and behavioral strategies, ACT supports individuals in acknowledging painful thoughts and emotions without becoming overwhelmed by them.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)

EMDR is an evidence-based somatic psychotherapy technique developed to help individuals process and heal from traumatic experiences or distressing life events. It uses bilateral stimulation techniques, such as eye movements, taps, or sounds, which activate the brain’s natural healing processes to support adaptive nervous system responses, healthy behavioral changes, and positive beliefs.

Expressive Arts Therapy (EXA)

EXA is a multidisciplinary, somatic-based therapeutic approach that invites individuals to explore and process their inner world through creative expression. Integrating modalities such as visual art, movement, music, writing, and drama, this approach helps to access deeper emotional truths and embodied wisdom without words. By engaging the imagination and the senses, EXA supports nervous system regulation, fosters emotional release, and awakens innate healing capacities through playful exploration and symbolic meaning-making.

Somatic Breathwork

Breathwork is a therapeutic approach that helps people connect with their body’s natural resources for healing. It involves conscious breathing patterns, visualization, sound, and interoceptive awareness to influence brain wave activity, increase neuromodulation, and support emotional processing. By titrating with intervals of activation and relaxation techniques, Somatic Breathwork helps to regulate the nervous system, reduce stress, generate resilience, and enhance mental, emotional, and physical well-being.
